Well Thumbed Wednesday

Getting Stoned with Savages chronicles the misadventures of Troost when he and his wife move to the Islands of Vanuatu.  There he discovers kava, a native drink that gives a languorous high to all those who partake of the shell, acclimates himself to island life, though he cannot quite comprehend the cannibalistic practices of the islands, and deals with centipedes the size of house cats.  Gross.
When his wife gets pregnant, they decide to move to a slightly more civilized place, Fiji, where he learns the sad truth that the super bowl and football are for wussies and rugby is for real men.  Enjoy!

Nest: 1

I am a huge fan of Sarah Richardson's interior design, even more so now that she has gotten over her fear of color.  Her rooms are always beautiful and filled with layers of texture and pattern, but they also have enough casual mixed within the elegance to make you feel like you can put your feet up and relax.

About half the items she uses are vintage or salvage items that she either repaints or reupholsters to make them look new, which gives her rooms the sense of history.  Not just pretty things but things that continue to have a purpose.

By the way, the floor lamp on the right side of the picture above and the floor lamp in the picture below, I want it.  If anyone knows where I can get one or what it's called so I can search for it, please let me know.

I love how she uses fabrics and mixes patterns

And the way she either repeats a shape or adds a single bold shape to create interest

Wanderlust Wardrobe

A wanderlust wardrobe, to me, is made up of garments that can travel, travel well, remind me of different places or invoke a sense of a destination.

Well Thumbed Wednesday

The Complete Cynic
Being Bunches of Wisdom Culled from the Calendars of

Oliver Herford
Ethel Watts Mumford
Addison Mizner

It's the 1911 edition, and it is a book filled with turned around common phrases and gorgeous illustrations.  Some of my favorites include

He laughs best,
who's laugh lasts.

I appolgize for the quality of some of the pics, it is a very old book
and i didn't want to bend the spine too much

Fools rush in and win
where angels fear to tread

As thou hast made thy bed,
why lie about it?

Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder.

Stays make waist

On with the dance,
let joy be un-refined

and

Never too old to yearn.

Strawberry Bruschetta

One of my favorite desserts, and so easy to make.  The recipe is from Giada's Everyday Italian

> toast the bread
> spread butter on the toast - this makes all the difference and adds a rich flavor.

> slice four or five strawberries, depending on the size of the bread you used
> layer the slices on the toast, i like to make it look really pretty here.

> Sprinkle a small tablespoon of granulated sugar on top

it looks like a lot but when it cooks it will caramelize and release all the juices in the berries

> pop it under the broiler for 5 to 10 minutes, again it depends on your stove and how hot it gets, just check on it periodically to make sure it doesn't burn.

And viola!  The finished bruschetta is crispy, juicy, sweet, rich and wonderful.

Eat and Enjoy!

Friday Faves and Raves

My favorite commercial

Friday Faves and Raves

I am a big scifi dork, and one of my favorite shows is BBC's Being Human, which just finished its third season.  Now there is also an american version of this show on SyFy, a show they call a SyFy "original," though obviously it is not.  The thing that really makes the BBC version a superior show is (a) the writing of Toby Whithouse and (b) the relationship between the actors.

Finding dvds of BBC television shows out side of Barnes and Noble is rather uncommon, and more than that BBC dvds are generally way over priced, averaging $60 to $80 per season (and BBC seasons are about 13 episodes, nowhere near the 23 to 26 episodes that american shows average every season).  So i was surprised at first finding the the third season of Being Human at Target last night, and thrilled when i read the price tag - $35!  Score!

If you haven't seen this show, watch it.  If you've seen the SyFy version, give the real original a try, it is a truely fantastic show.
